X-ray Properties of the Central kpc of AGN and Starbursts: The Latest News from Chandra
نویسنده
چکیده
The X-ray properties of 15 nearby (v < 3, 000 km s−1) galaxies that possess AGN and/or starbursts are discussed. Two-thirds have nuclear extended emission on scales from ∼ 0.5 to ∼ 1.5 kpc that is either clearly associated with a nuclear outflow or morphologically resembles an outflow. Galaxies that are AGN-dominated tend to have linear structures while starburst-dominated galaxies tend to have plume-like structures. Significant X-ray absorption is present in the starburst regions, indicating that a circumnuclear starburst is sufficient to block an AGN at optical wavelengths. Galaxies with starburst activity possess more Xray point sources within their central kpc than non-starbursts. Many of these sources are more luminous than typical X-ray binaries. The Chandra results are discussed in terms of the starburst-AGN connection, a revised unified model for AGN, and possible evolutionary scenarios.

Comparing Chandra and Sirtf Observations for Obscured Starbursts and Agn at High Redshift
Tracking the star formation rate to high redshifts requires knowledge of the contribution from both optically visible and obscured sources. The dusty, optically-obscured galaxies can be located by X-ray and infrared surveys. To establish criteria for selecting such sources based only on X-ray and infrared surveys, we determine the ratio of infrared to X-ray brightness that would be observed by ...
متن کاملA Chandra Survey of the Nearest Ulirgs: Obscured Agn or Super-starbursts?
We present initial results from a Chandra survey of a complete sample of the 8 nearest (z ≤ 0.04) ultraluminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs), and also include the IR-luminous galaxy NGC 6240 for comparison. In this paper we use the hard X-rays (2-8 kev) to search for the possible presence of an obscured AGN. In every case, a hard X-ray source is detected in the nuclear region. If we divide the sample a...
متن کاملA Chandra X-Ray Survey of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We present results from Chandra observations of 14 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs; log(LIR/L⊙) ≥ 12) with redshifts between 0.04 and 0.16. The goals of the observations were to investigate any correlation between infrared color or luminosity and the properties of the X-ray emission and to attempt to determine whether these objects are powered by starbursts or active galactic nuclei (AG...

In our search for “hidden” AGN we present results from a Chandra observation of the nearby cluster Abell 2255. Eight cluster galaxies are associated with point-like X-ray emission, and we classify these galaxies based on their X-ray, radio, and optical properties. At least three are associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN) with no optical signatures of nuclear activity, with a further two b...
متن کاملAGN dust tori: the X-ray-infrared connection
We have combined the well-studied CLASXS Chandra survey in Lockman with the Spitzer SWIRE survey data to study the X-ray-infrared connection for AGN. The sample consists of 401 X-ray-sources, of which 306 are detected by Spitzer, and a further 257 AGN candidates detected through their dust torus, but not by Chandra. We have used spectroscopic redshifts and classifications from the literature, w...
